Be Who You Are
By Todd Parr
October 2016 | $17.99 | Ages 3 – 6
ISBN 978-0-316-26523-2 | Ebook ISBN 978-0-316-26522-5

“Be who you are,” begins Parr, in an emphatic call to embrace one’s individuality. “Be old. Be young. Be a different color.” (Given that this is a Parr book, it goes without saying that those colors could be purple, pink, or green.) Working in his customary boldly outlined, vibrantly colored drawing style, Parr balances bold proclamations with playful humor. “Learn in your own way,” he writes as a cat looks at a bowl of dog food, clearly intrigued; humans are encouraged to broaden their tastes, too, as Parr lines up a row of food trucks for a spread that reads “Try new things.” Subtle visual moments should speak to the readers who need them (a boy wears a feather boa, a mouse stands up to a cat with a firm “no!”), but there’s nothing quiet about Parr’s overall point, which roars across several pages in capital letters: “Just be who you are!

Teachers Rock!
By Todd Parr
April 2016| $16.99 | Ages 3-6
ISBN 978-0-316-26512-6

A superb selection about teachers and all they do for their students. They teach children new things, inspire creativity, and help them realize their talents. The best ones make kids laugh, provide comfort, and help when it is needed the most. Teachers do their best to make their classrooms feel like they are the greatest place to be. They celebrate events throughout the year, take the class on field trips, and make families feel welcome. Teachers buy supplies and decorations, allow an assortment of creatures for show-and-tell, and assist students with all types of problems. A section at the end of the book helps young ones understand that teachers are regular people who sleep at night, spill things on the floor, brush their teeth, and even buy underwear. As with all of his titles, Parr has included simple and powerful, kid-friendly illustrations. The colors are bright, vivid, and eye-catching. Animal characters help make this book entertaining and truly diverse. VERDICT A fun offering to share with any preschool class.

Parr turns his bold, vibrant colors and simple declarative sentences to teachers, looking at what they do and who they are. Doubtless those just beginning school will get a positive view of teachers from Parr's book. How can they help it when teachers do so much? From encouraging creativity and making you laugh to playing games, helping you do all sorts of new things, and taking you on field trips, there is not much that teachers do that isn't covered (one teacher even hands a presumably snotty-nosed student a tissue, and another has paper towels for an accident). One scene is all too true for too many teachers: a smiling teacher stands at the checkout, the register totaling $100, and the text reads, "They make sure students have everything they need." With very few exceptions, Parr's multicolored students (a mix of human, alien, and animal) and teachers sport simple, uniform smiles, even when crying. The teachers are a nice mix of male and female, one is in a wheelchair, and several are in ethnic dress. And Parr addresses that age-old question of where teachers live: "Teachers can be just like you and me" is illustrated with four teachers variously eating, brushing teeth, picking out underwear, and sleeping in a bed with a dog and a cat. Sure to reassure readers nervous about their own teachers-to-be.

The Goodbye Book
Written and illustrated by Todd Parr Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 32 pp., ages 3-6
***½ out of four stars

Todd Parr, author of It’s Okay to Be Different, has carved out a niche for himself as “the feelings man” of picture books, and it’s not hard to see why. In glossy, color-saturated pages, we’re introduced to a small fish who’s lost its companion. As the fish goes through many reactions to the loss, the text is directed straight at the reader, giving permission for all sorts of feelings: “You might be very sad. / You might be very mad.” The art is simple and naïve, as though Parr loaded up Paint on his computer and started clicking away. With its accessible style and kindhearted text, The Goodbye Book will serve kids as a sympathetic friend during trying times.

November 2015/ $17/ Ages 3 to 6
ISBN 978-0-316-40497-6 / Ebook 978-0-316-40495-2

This picture book shows young children that even when goodbyes bring sadness and unfamiliar emotions, those feelings will ease with the help of time, remembrance, and support. The Goodbye Book addresses the range of emotions someone might feel after a loss, including anger, sadness, lack of joy, and denial, as well as the desire to stop eating or sleeping. Parr explains that even when a person starts to feel better, there could be moments of grief or confusion, but at the end of the day, another person will always be available to provide love and comfort. The colorful illustrations, in an naive, childlike style and outlined in black, feature a goldfish that experiences the emotions discussed throughout the book. Young readers can infer what the goldfish is feeling by looking at the picture, and the imaginative representation gives the book a soothing tone. The Goodbye Book never specifies what the exact scenario is, making it an appropriate choice whether a child is dealing with death or another difficult situation. VERDICT An honest but gentle look at the grief that comes with saying goodbye. An essential purchase for all early childhood collections.

Todd reads It’s Okay to Make Mistakes on KidLitTV

"It’s okay to make mistakes sometimes. Everyone does— even grown-ups! That’s how we learn.
Love, Todd".

"Parr encourages readers to see mistakes as opportunities with characteristic élan. In his ineffable fashion, Parr delivers a reassuring mashup that’s part Keith Haring and part Sesame Street."
        —Kirkus Reviews, May 28, 2014

"Readers are reassured that these common experiences (spilling milk, not knowing an answer, being shy) can happen to anyone, and they will receive positive messages about confidence and empathy."
